HEAVYWEIGHT BOXING
Dominion Championship NICOL BEATS CAMPBELL By Telegraph—Press Association. Invercargill, May 1. 'l'he heavyweight boxing championship of New Zealand changed hands tonight, when Ray Nicol (Ohai), 12.5, defeated Alan Campbell (Timarn), 12.6, on points in a fifteen-round contest which also carried a purse of £l5O. The bout was staged in the Civic Theatre, which was crammed. It was marred by a good deal of clinching and wrestling, and the referee was kept busy separating the combatants. In the opening rounds Nicol took a slight lead, but from the sixth round on Campbell appeared to be on top. His punching was cleaner and ,he made Nicol miss frequently. Nicol was the aggressor, but found his opponent very elusive. In the last round there was plenty of action, but n’ot a great’deal of clean bitting, with Nicol winning that round. The decision in favour of Nicol was particularly well received. Some observers at the ringside were of opinion that. Campbell was ahead on points. Billy Sullivan (Hastings) has chai longed the winner.
