WOOL RESEARCH

Work at Massey College NORTH ISLAND CLIP Need of Better Marketing Wool research work being carried out at Massey Agricultural College, Palmerston North, was inspected by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, on Friday. Mr. Forbes was accompanied on his visit by Dr. E. Marsden, Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, and the opportunity was taken to discuss wool questions with the wool experts at the college and several prominent breeders who were present. The main question discussed was the manner in which the value of the North Island clip could be increased both by improvements in quality and by better methods of marketing. Speaking of his visit on Saturday, Mr. Forbes said it was made clear during the discussion that a better organisation of the industry was necessary. The arguments used had appealed to him. He felt that the time bad come when those engaged in the industry should take in hand measures for its own improvement, and he had assured those present of the Government’s sympathetic consideration of any proposals that might be put forward with this end in view. He understood that the matter would be discussed further at a conference of sheep breeders and wool growers to be held at Massey College on May 23 and May 24. Mr. Forbes also inspected the experiments at the Dairy Research Institute on the production of a butter suitable for the north of England market. He was informed that very encouraging results had been obtained on trial shipments during the past year.
