RETURNED SOLDIERS

Considerable enthusiasm was displayed at the animal meeting of the Wairarapa Returned Soldiers’ Association held in Masterton last evening. There was a large attendance, almost a record number of financial members bring present. The chairman. Mr. J. 11. Irving, said that indications pointed to the association enjoying another successful year. Referring to the recent Poppy Day appeal, Mr. Irving said it had been very successful, the amount realised in Masterton showing an increase of £3 over last years figures. The receipts received to date from the various parts of the W-ti-rarapa amounted to £l-18/15/3. and it was anticipated that receipts vet to come to hand would increase this amount to £22->/l;t/3. Last vein- the total receipts were £20!1./17/(J. Brief mention was made of the position of the soldier settlers in the W.-tira-rana. ami their future outlook as a result of the tall in the values of primary products. A motion was passed recommending that the chief executive watch the position of soldier settlers very eloselv. and see that each settlor has ample left from each month's factory cheque to provide himself am' his family with the necessaries of life. The following officers were elected Chairman Mr .1 I] Irving: vice-chair-man Mr \V R. Birch: bon. treasurer. Mr. L. S. Nicol; committee Messrs. W I. Free. J. McGregor. D. M Pollock. G M. Permain. E. S. Smith, ami W. .1. White: hon. auditor, Mr. N. II James. Mr. G. Comtek was appointed to the committee to represent the returned men on relief works.
