Business premises and homes were flooded. For miles waters rushed feet deep over the roads. Several bridges were swept away on Princess Highway, the main road to Victoria, and traffic was cut off. The post office at Hethercote was flooded, and the postmaster and his family were forced to race for safety. There was an extraordinary storm at Dorrigo. It was accompanied by torrential rain, deafening thunder and nerve-racking lightning. Three people were taken to hospital paralysed after being struck by lightning. Crops were washed out of the ground. Hail penetrated the hides of cattle, leaving them bleeding. Houses and sheds were unroofed.
