SOME RECENT SALES

Jamieson’s Purchases

EARLY EDUCATION

Notes and Comments

(By

“Carbine.”)

After the yearling sales the Trentham the colts by Limond —Ilomuge, Chief Ruler—Cymene, Hunting Song— Speechless, and Grand Knight—Cocoanut, who were purchased by J. T. Jamieson, were sent north to Glenora Park, near Auckland. Jamieson has returned to Sydney, but his purchases will not follow him for a while. They are to be broken in by R. Miller, and will remain in New Zealand for a few months. One to J. L. Gray, Mr. C. Boles has sent the Paper Money —Killena colt which he purchased at the national yearling sales to J. L. Gray at Takanini. In P. E. Pope’s Stable. The colts by Whirlwind from Lorna Doone and Legality, who were passed in at the national yearling sales, have been sent to Takanini for P. E. Pope to train for Mr. R. T. Reid, who won the Wellington Cup with Royal Artist. Lady Quex. Lady Quex will not race at the Takapuna meeting, but is to appear at the Tarapaki figures next month. It is reported that she may contest the Flying on the first day at Hawera, and the Cup and the Stakes at New Plymouth. One morning this week Lady Quex galloped a mile in 48 2-ssec., so it is evident she is well. Answer to Correspondent. V.L., Wellington—Will reply as soon as possible. Coimterplay Injured. The two-year-old Counterplay was not raced at the 'Wellington meeting, though he was brought to Trentham. The reason given is that he slipped a muscle. It is expected he will be seen in public again very soon. A Napier Chance. Good Hunting is engaged in two races at Napier Park to-morrow, and, considering his form at Trentham, he must be reckoned hard to beat in whichever race he contests. To-day’s Reminders. Marlborough and Taranaki nominations close to-day. Egmont acceptances are due to-day. Must Be Hard. Taking a line through the form of La Moderne, Gay Marigold must have a great chance in the Zealandia Handicap at Takapuna to-morrow. In the Queen’s Plate at Ellerslie on Boxing Day Gay-Marigold ran second to La Moderne. They met at even weights. Since then La Moderne’s form has been excellent, and points to Gay Marigold’s being very hard to catch round the Takapuna turns under her light weight. C.J.C.’s Problem. The C.J.C. is faced with difficulties in the working of the win and place system which is to be operated at its February meeting. It was decided not to open the gates to the “outer” at all. Only the inside enclosure will be open, and to this the admission fee will be 3/6. The C.J.C. is the first South Island club to try the system, but it is understood Dunedin and others will fall into line. Win and Place at Ashhurst. ■While the place machine put through

'much more money than the win machine at Trentham, tjie reverse was the case at Ashhurst. Following are the figures for this year and last

Valpai’s Gallop. In a gallop at Te Rapa on Tuesday Valpai cleared right away from two companions, Potoa Lad and Beau Irish, over the concluding stages of a six-furlong gallop on the plough, which took Valpai 1 min. 17 l-ssec. Valpai is in great order for his engagements at the Takapuna meeting, and is better now than he has ever been. Billy Boy’s Future. Looking bright, and healthy after a short let-up, Billy Boy has made his reappearance on the tracks at Ellerslie, and is to be worked along with a view to competing at the Auckland autumn meeting, which opens on April 15 (says the “Herald”). He will then be kept going for the Great Northern meeting in June, after which iw will be shipped to Australia to compete in the Grand National Steeplechase at Flemington in July. After that he will return to the Dominion to contest the Grand National Steeplechase at Riccarton in August, a race he won last year with 11.13. It is an ambitious programme, but Billy Boy is a class steeplechaser, and may rise to greater heights than ever this season. Hitting Irish Sweeps. The sale of tickets in the Irish sweeps is illegal in England, but, of course, hundreds of thousands are sold there just the same. The English postal authorities, however, detain a tremendous number of letters. The period covered was not stated, but in connection with Irish sweepstakes, 117,532 letters had been detained up to November, and £123,756 returned to senders for tickets. Makers of Jockeys.

The “Horse and Hound” (London), after remarking how curious it was that few trainers achieved success in teaching boys in their stables to become jockeys of ability, paid tribute in this respect to Richard Wootton and his son Stanley. In mentioning Victor Smyth, the paper says that though that rider commenced his apprenticeship witli Wootton senior, he finished it with Stanley Wootton, who has also been responsible for the training of Joseph, Caldwell, Leslie Cordell, Robert Dick, Patrick Donoghue, Francis Field, Kenneth Gethin, Frederick Hunter, Stafford Ingham. Sean Magee, Joseph Marshall, Bernard Rook, Jack Sirett, Alfred, and Charles Smirke, William Stott, and Arthur Wragg, truly an accomplished group of riders. In a recent speech, Stott, who has made much fame as a cross-country rider, said that Richard and Stanley Wootton gave every boy a chance to make good, which is high praise indeed.

The spoken words Inspired by love Are prized all costly gifts above. The spoken words ot wrath which fall Our wild remorse can ne’er recall. The apoken words of sympathy To breaking hearts a boon shall be The spoken words brine ease, be sure. When sayine Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure. —Advt
