BURNED STOLEN NOTES

Man Takes Alax-m After Theft After stealing a ten-shilling note and a postal note for 2/6 Joseph Cecil Hayden, aged 27. burnt them, and pleaded guilty in the Petone Police Court yesterday to their theft. He was convicted and fined £2 and costs by Messrs. A. Anderson and A. Coles, J.P.’s. According to Senior-Sergeant 11. 11. Butler, defendant was employed by a farmer at Taita, Mr. A. E. Barues. One of his duties was to collect flic mail from the gate 4 anil while doing this he opened a letter and extracted the notes. He then apparently became frightened, and burnt the money. .When interviewed by the.postal authorities and the police he admitted the theft. Hayden had been before the court previously. and did not appear to be strong mentally. Mr. Barnes had stated that, lie was willing to take defendant back if he were not imprisoned.
