EXPLOSION OF GAS
Miners Critically Injured ONE DIES IN HOSPITAL (Received Jan. 24, 10.15 p.m.) Sydney, Jan. 24. Two miners in the Balmain Colliery were critically injured by an explosion of a gas pocket. David Kerr and Henry Williams were boring into the rock with a hand-drill when, presumably, a spark from a hammer ignited the gas. Kerr, despite frightful burns, dragged himself some distance to telephone to the engineer at the surface, 3000 ft. above. The cage descended, and they were brought to the surface. Williams died in hospital. Kerr is still in a very critical! condition.
