Centenary of Pioneer Journal ’ Due hundred years ago on January 5 the first issue of “The West Australian,” of Perth, made its appearance under the name of “The Perth Gazette and Western Australian .. Journal.”. The centenary number of this pioneer newspaper, in the form of an historic’souvenir to mark theopening of the new- buildihg,- Newspaper House, is to hand by the last mail,,. A publication of- 72 'pages; the ceil ternary number is worthy of the occasion.; Itcontains not only, a history of the’journal but a profusely illustrated record of the progress of’ Western Australia and the city of Perth during the past century. The front, page of the number consists of woodcuts depicting . the four buildings, from which “The-West, Australian” has been issued, the first being a humble shin-gle-roofed., cottage. • '“lts- destiny’.at one with that: of tbecState.. it has evolved as one of the recognised institu.tibns-bf Western Australia, bearing a tradition linked with names illustrious in history,” states the superscription of a comprehensive and dignified newspaper production.
