Belmont Women’s Institute A most enjoyable afternoon was spent by the members of the Belmont Women’s Institute at the January meeting, when, by courtesy of Jlrs. Powell, the meeting was held in the grounds of her home. The day was a perfect one, and the view through the bush looking down over the Hutt Valley was glorious. ■ ■ In the absence of both president and vice-president, Miss Maddever presided, and a discussion of the coming programme was held, many helpful suggestions being made. Members were greatly. interested in a demonstration of tatting by Mrs. Angus. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Plan and Bennett, and votes of thanks accorded to Mesdames Angus and Powell and Miss Maddever. Miss Wilson has been appointed convener of the dramatic circle, and arrangements are in hand for plays to be produced by the circle at an early date. It is hoped there will be a good attendance at- the next meeting, when nominations for the new committee will bo received. A talk on “Samoa” by Mrs. Ross will be given, and there will be a competition for the best plate of plain scones. A competition for guessing the name of a doll was won by Mrs. Doran, the name being Nell. WOMEN SHOPPERS No Change in Fifty Years Dominion Special Service. (By Mavis.) London, Dec. 7. “Women years ago would go shopping in carriages with footmen behind them, but to-day there are far fewer servants and duchesses and distinguished people will often do their shopping on foot or by telephone. A woman today will go about loaded with packages, a thing she would not have dreamed of doing before the war.” These are some of the changes noted by Uncle Ben Harmer, who has just completed his fiftieth year as a grocer in the same London shop. He remembers the days when women wore bustles and wide hats. But he says that, though dresses have changed. the types of women shoppers are still the Mme. There arc some, he concludes, who know what they want and mean to get it, and there are others who cannot decide which kind of , cheese to take and whose minds have Jo bo made un for them.
