KEEN PLAY SEEN

Games in Wairarapa Tennis Tournament RESULTS OF EVENTS Dominion Special Service. Masterton, Jau. 21. Play iu the Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association's annual championships ana handicap tourney, in conjunction with winch the North island championships are being decided, was continued to-day iu perfect weather. Good progress was made in all the events, and several were completed. It is anticipated that all finals will be played to-morrow. Tenuis or a better ciass was witnessed to-day, and a number of games were very keenly contested. Further interest was added to the tourney by the arrival of Malfroy, Rhodes-Williams, and Miss Whyte, the preseut holder of the North Island women’s championship. Malfroy is almost certain to annex the men's title. Ho is showing the effects of the strenuous tennis he has been playing lately, however, and iu his matches today was not at top form. He met RhodesWilliams, who was reckoned the strongest player he would have to contend with; in the second round of the men's championship and defeated him 6 —3, 3—6, 6—l. The match provided some bright tennis, but neither player exerted himself unduly. Iu the third round of the event Alalfroy met Robertson. (Palmerston North), aud this match provided the best tennis so far seen at the tourney. Malfroy won the first set o—2, but Robertson in the second played a great game and finally took the sot 12—10. In the last set he dropped his service, and Malfroy took the

set 6—4. Robertson’s placements were excellent, and bls drives hard and fast. Malfroy was not so accurate as usual and missed badly with his short volleys. y Two interesting matches were played in the men’s championship doubles. JLowry and Rhodes-Williams, who were generally fancied, suffered defeat at the hands of E. Pearce and Coombe. Lowry and Rhodes-Williams failed to reproduce the form* shown earlier in the day, and Pearce and Coombe rose to the occasion, taking the match 6—2, G—-2. Iu the second set the losers appeared to be overcautious. Lowry fell into mistakes which his opponents, particularly Pearce, were quick to take advantage of. Pearce repeatedly killed the soft lobs sent over by the Hawke’s Bay player. The winners played steady tennis throughout, and their victory was a meritorious one. Court and K. Dyer in another match in the same event characterised by long rallies defeated Ferkius and Sykes, 6— 8, B—G, G—2. J. W. Gunn (Auckland), runner-up m the boys’ .singles event at the Dominion tourney, annexed the boys' singles title, defeating I. Bowden (Masterton), 6—o, 6—o, in the final. Gunn also won the men’s B grade handicap event. Conceding Watson 16 points in the final, he defeated him 70—50. Gunn played nice tennis in both matches.
