HUTT PERSONALS Mr. and Mrs. Macarthy-Reid, Maori Bank, Upper Hutt, have beep spending a few days at the Terminus Hotel. Pictou. Mr. and Mrs. Morrell and family, Upper Hutt, have left for a motor camping tour of the North Island. Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Woods, Dunedin, and their son and daughter, have arrived at Upper Hutt, where they will reside in the future. ■ Miss Nora Sanders' and Miss Madge Sanders, Island Bay, Wellington, have been staying at Upper Hutt during tiie week-end. •

TENNIS TOURNAMENT

Combined Doubles Event

Good entries were received for the combined doubles tournament in the Hutt Valley for the Jenkins Cup yesterday. The senior grade competed for the Jenkins Cup, and the junior grade for Mr. Walter Lee’s (senior) trophy. Play, which was on the Yankee tournament principle, resulted as follows: —

N. Edwards and Miss I. Shell beat O. House and Miss 0. Mawson, 9 —4.

Semi-final. —Mr. Taylor and Miss Ashton beat Mr. Sherwood and Miss Smith, B—B. Mr. Worry and Miss Hastings beat Mr. Featonby and Miss House, 9—3. The final of the senior grade was won by Mr. Sherwood and Miss Hastings, and the final of the third grade by Mr. D. McT.ooj and Miss K. Bartosh. UPPER HUTT BOROUGH Meeting of Council The Upper Hutt Borough Council met last night, the Mayor, Mr. A. J. McCurdy. presiding. Th re were present Councillors J. B. .‘wman. F. P. Keys, A. Howell, T. R. Jameson. J. P. O Flaherty, and G. 11. Guthrie. On the motion of the Mayor, Councillors Guthrie and O’Flaherty wore appointed to he a deputation to the Unemployment Board to present the council’s resolution protesting against the cuts in the unemployment allocations. It was decided tnat the Mayor accompany and introduce the deputation. . . . Reporting on the- activities of the Upper Hutt Volunteer Fire Brigade, the secretary. Mr. G. 11. Guthrie, stated that some remuneration should lie sought by rhe council from the Railway Department ror services rendered by the brigade.
