We met Sir Joseph Isherwood recently and sought to obtain from him some particulars of the uew form of hull he has patented and has had subjected to a series of model tests iu the Tcddington Tank (states “The Syren and Shipping”). He was not willing to say very much at the present juncture, but we gathered that the tests that have been carried out proved very successful and that important developments are pending. Sir Joseph, whose longitudinal and “bracketless” systems of ship construction have brought him world-wide fame, has been engaged for a long time on his latest invention, which, it is understood, will provide shipowners with a cargo-carrier of high efficiency and marked economy in operation. The significance of this to the British shipbuilding industry need not be stressed. It has been stated that orders for a number of vessels of the new type arc likely to be placed .in the near future, but Sir Joseph would not say anything on this point, though he intimated that' lie hoped soon to he in a position to give particulars of the system lie has evolved. The ships to be ordered —six of them, it is understood —will be coal-burners.
