DEER-SKIN BONUS
Removal of Guarantee
The opinion that there was still a market for deerskins, which he considered could be handled efficiently by private enterprise, was expressed by the Hon. A. Hamilton on his return from the south, who as Minister of Internal Affairs administered the Government guarantee bonus on dearskins. “It is known,” the Minister said, “that numbers of men have been making a living from the proceeds of deerskins, and, although the guarantee of the bonus has been withdrawn, the Department of Internal Affairs is still prepared to accept skins in the event of any difficulty being found by persons holding skins, in marketing them, and, while there is no Government guarantee in the matter, the department will in the meantime pay 1/4 per lb. dry weight for first-grade skins. The position of the deer menace appears to be coming under control.”
