LIQUOR SEIZED
Wellington Bowling Club
Raided POLICE ACT ON WARRANT Armed with a search warrant issued under the Licensing Act, police raided the Wellington Bowling Club, Aro Street, on Saturday morning and seized a quantity of liquor. No information has been laid yet, but it is understood that charges are pending.
The raid, which was carried out by Senior-Sergeant Scott, Sergeant Wilson and other members of the Force, took place shortly after 11 o’clock, when very few bowlers were at the club. There were present in the pavilion at the time Mr. C. Bary, secretary Of the club; Mr. A. Erskine, treasurer; and • Mr. R. Roberts, a director, to whom Senior-Sergeant Scott presented the warrant.
A quantity of spirituous and fermented liquor was seized, stacked in cases, and taken away by a motor-lorry which had pulled up opposite the side premises of the club in Ohiro Road.
By request a tally of the liquor was. taken and the officials supplied with a copy.
Liquid refreshments for visitors are usually kept in stock by bowling clubs throughout New Zealand, but the method of the dispensation differs with individual clubs. Some have an entertainment fund out of which liquor is bought, while others either prefer to leave it to Individual members to purchase their own refreshments and keep them in their lockers. Something of a similar practice exists in the case of golf and other sports clubs. The issue involved will be of widespread interest in view of the fact that it was considered courteous, if not necessary, to provide refreshments for the many hundreds of bowlers from all parts of the Dominion who took part in the national tournament which concluded on Friday evening.
