“CHARLEY’S AUNT”

Amusing Incident on Bowling Green

THE TESTER AT WORK

Some six hundred, spectators were provided with an hour’s entertainment during the long interlude between the two final games in the New Zealand rinks bowling championships on Wellington green on Friday. All were waiting for the finalists to appear, when the chute and testing apparatus, together with the standard bowl, were brought on Jo the green. , By. them were deposited the sixteen ■ bowls to be used in the game. For some reason—or maybe for no reason at all —the executive decided to have all the bowls tested before the final was played. The official tester to the N.Z.B.A. took his position at the chute, and Mr. J. McDougall, the Wellington centre tester at the other end. The job was done thoroughly. Each bowl went down three or four times. Sometimes the bowls went down first, and then the test bowl. “Send me Charley,” said Mr. Scott "Charley” was the test bowl;

A flozeu of the . bowls bad : gone through, and it began to get monotonous ututil the spectators began to get humorous, and heckled the tester with shouts of “Shot,” “Bravo,” "Give Charlie a go.” Somethin;' more serious then turned up. One or two of the bowls did not satisfy the tester, and ho gave them more severe trials. They did uot stand up to it. “Try Charley’s aunt,” called someone, and there was a roar of laughter, but when the tester went into the tool shed with one bowl to put it on the lathe-it was seen something .was. wrong.

After squie adjustment it was still a shade out when "Charley” followed up. “Put Charley on the lathe.” came advice from the bank. .

Another slight adjustment, and the tester was satisfied, and the 10 bowls were rolled on to the green, and play commenced.
