CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS

Play iu the W.airarapa Lawn Tennis Association’s annual championshin and handicap tournament, in conjunction with which the North Island tenuis championships are being decided, commenced on Saturday on the Masterton and Memorial tennis clubs’ courts. The weather was fine but dull, although the sun broke through a cloudy sky on occasions during the afternoon. Rain overnight had freshened the courts, which are showing to some extent the effect of a dry summer. Good progress was made in the early rounds of the various events. A number of competing players have not yet arrived, however, including several who have been engaged at the Dominion tournament at Wellington. These will arrive early next week: Several late entries have been received, including entries from T. RhodesWilliams (Christchurch), and Miss B. Gould (Canterbury). Rhodes-Williams will be partnered by Miss Gould iu the combined doubles, aud by J. N. Lowry (Hawke’s Bay) in the men’s doubles. . Last year’s Wairarapa championship winners are: Men’s singles, R. Ferkins (Wellington); men’s doubles, S. Wheeler (Wellington) and J. Lowry (Hawke’s Bay); women’s singles, Miss M. Gibson (Timaru): women’s doubles. Misses M. Whyte (Wellington) and M. Gibson (Timaru);' combined doubles, R.. Court and Miss M. Howell; girls’ singles, Jean Highet (Wellington); boys’ singles, J. Payton (Masterton).
