Man Sentenced to Gaol

SATURDAY’S POLICE CASES

For being found asleep in the Botanical Gardens at. 3.10 a.m. on Saturday, John O’Grady, labourer, aged 50, was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment. by Mr. T. B. McNeil, S-M., in the Police Court on Saturday. Later O’Grady informed the magistrate that, fie wished to appeal, and Mr. McNeil told him that he could do so on depositing the usual securities.

Assault on Girl

Felix Mulligan was lined £5, with the option of going to prison for a month, on a charge of having assaulted a girl on the Hutt Road on Sunday last.

Detective-Sergeant Revell said that while two police oflicers were travelling along the Hutt Road in a motor-car they saw Mulligan and a little girl sitting on the side of the road. They stopped the car, and questioned the girl, but could get nothing out of her, as she was sub-normal. Mulligan had previously been convicted of indecent assault.

Idle and Disorderly

A plea of not guilty was entered by Claude Henry Pointon, carpenter, aged 38, when charged with, being idle and disorderly, in that he consorted with persons of undesirable character. Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within twelve, months. A similar charge was brought against Malsie Pepper, who pleaded not guilty. A remand till Tuesday was granted, in order to allow accused to obtain legal assistance. Bail was allowed.

Other Cases

“It was only a drunken argument; he struck me first, and I had to defend myself,” said George Henry O’Brien, labourer, aged 51, when charged with assaulting Benjamin Norman Campbell. A fine of 10/- was imposed, and O’Brien was also ordered to pay 4/- witness’s expenses, or go to prison for 48 hours. “Why don’t you go to camp?” the magistrate asked Maurice Walter Dorr, motor engineer, aged 53, who appeared to explain why he had failed to comply with the terms of his release upon probation. The probation officer, Mr. T. P. Mills, said that Dorr had paid £2/12/6 out of the £5/3/- of which he was ordered to make restitution. He_ had not reported for nearly a year. “You can have your liberty now,” said the magistrate, but, remember, if you do not comply with the terms of your release I will send you to prison.”
