About People and Events H.M.S. VERONICA IN PORT In the course of her cruise round the New Zealand coast, H.M.S. Veronica arrived at Wellington at 1.30 p.m. yesterday from Picton, and berthed at No. 2 Queen’s Wharf. She will remain in port until January 30. Coaster Foxton Sails. The coastal motor-ship Foxton, which touched Karori Rock in the heavy fog last Sunday night, while bound from Patea to Wellington, and went on the patent slip on Monday for examination and repairs, came off the slip yesterday afternoon and left for Patea. Fire Destroys House. Fire completely destroyed a twostory house at Belmont about 2.30 yesterday morning. The occupants, Mr. and Mrs. Macale and their three children, managed to escape, but were able to save little beyond some of their personal belongings. The house, which was situated on the Speedy Estate, was insured for £BOO in the State Fire Office. Idle and Disorderly. Four labourers, Robert Landy, aged 45; Percy William Old. aged 41; James Ward, aged 45; and Harry Donnelly, aged 47, were charged before Mr. T. B. McNeil, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday, with being idle and disorderly and without lawful means of support. They were each sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour. Law and Reason. “Now you’re talking law—previously you were talking reason,” said Mr. W. B. Matheson yesterday to the president, Mr. W. J. Polson, MJ’., at the executive meeting of the Farmers’ Union. “You can’t have both together,” Mr. Matheson said, smiling. “What!” said Mr. Polson. “You can’t have both law and reason together? Is that it?” Mr. Matheson said nothing. He went on smiling. Two Small Fires. Slight damage to a washhouse and bedroom occurred about 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon when a fire broke out at 151 Clyde Street, Island Bay, a sixroomed residence owned and occupied by Mr. Frederick Carnegie. Shortly after 6 o’clock last evening passers-by noticed a small fire in the window of a jeweller’s shop at 282 Lambton Quay, owned by Mr. 11. W. Lloyd. An electric light globe igniting some celluloid articles appeared to be the cause of the trouble. Very little damage was done.
