WOMAN SENT TO GAOL
Theft and False Pretences BREACH OF PROBATION Pleading guilty to two charges of theft, to two charges of false pretences, and to a breach of her probation order, Gertrude Aileen Tayier, a domestic, aged 43, was sentenced to reformative detention not exceeding two years by Mr. T. B. McNeil, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. Detective-Sergeant Revell said that accused had bought a sewing machine valued at £23, and after paying Instalments amounting to £l4/13/6, had sold it to an auctioneer for £5. As Mrs. Creagh, she had bought another machine from the same firm, and after paying £l/3/- on it, sold it to the auctioneer for £5/10/-. She had also obtained goods valued at £l2/17/- and £4/17/- from a city firm by false pretences. Mr. A. B. Sievwright, who appeared for accused, said that her husband had deserted her some years ago, and she had had to bring up her two children. Mr. McNeil said that it was his duty to take such steps in the interests of the public and in her own interests as would prevent her from committing the same class of offences, and he sentenced her to reformative detention for not more than two years.
