THE RACING WORLD

TRENTHAM TO-DAY

Rain Benefits Tracks

GOING WILL BE GOOD

Smart Riecarton Trials

G. JONES ADDS TO TEAM

(By

“The Watcher.”)

The Wellington liacing Club's summer meeting, which will open at Trentham today. will continue on Saturday and conclude on Monday. Ths heavy rain that fell at Trentham on Tuesday and again yesterday morning has been of great benefit to the tracks. It came at an awkward time for trainers us regards their galloping work, but it has ensured the sting being out of the going, and with the nice sole of green grass nil the course proper, conditions for the actual racing have never been better. Good Galloping. At Kiccnrton on Tuesday, under favourable conditions, two of the best trials on the plough- put up for some time were those of Drumfire and Cricket Bat, aVIio ■went separately. Drumfire was led up to the post with a hack. When released he gathered speed very quickly, and rail two furlongs in 0.24 4-5, the final thr’e taking 0.37 2-5. The five furlongs, therel fore, were covered in 1.2 1-5. A. Eastwood rode him, and tlie gelding went unfalteringly all the way. Cricket Bat, after clocking 0.24 1-5 for two, closed the five in 1.2 3-5, travelling very smoothly. These two essays were outstandingly brilliant. , Red Heckle at His Best. In a sevenlfurlongs gallop on the trial with Shatter and Ramo, Red Heckle hail the advantage of the clcar-away, but Shatter, running between them, with Red Heckle On the outer, was in front at tile six furlongs ]>eg. Red Heckle drew level crossing the top, and beat the other to the wire, without being pushed, in 1.30. Ramo was tailed off. It wns a very encouraging effort on Red Heckle's part, and apparently he is back to the form lie was in prior to Christmas. Ranelagh finished ahead of Hurlingham in a five-fur-longs'flutter, but both went exceptionally well all the way. No time was taken. For Trentham. Morepork and Zeebrugge ran six furlongs on the plough. There was' little between them in 1.18. tlie last five taking 1.5 1-5. Similar time was taken by Shelter, with a fenther-wfilght up. and Rocket. Iti this case the first three furlongs occbpied 0,37 4-5. Shelter appeared to have Rocket in safe keeping, but the latter’s ability cannot be gauged by his track work. Later in the day, W’se Choice, with Robin Hood, clocked 1.18 2-3. Over half a mile Importance held Errantry in 0.50 4-5. Back to Melbourne. G. Jones, private trainer to Mr. W. R, Kemball. at Caulfield, will leave on his return trip by the Wanganella to-morrow. He Will take back Greenhorn, Posy. Foghorn and the yearling colt brother to Cape Royal (Cape Horn —Pripccsa Pat). Answers to CoiTespofideiits. “Chips,” Petone.—£ll/14/0. Tigerisni for Sydney, Mr. A. Lile, of New Plymouth, Owner of Tigerism. has received cable advich from the Randwick trainer. F, McGrath, agreeing to take his gelding and prepare him for tlie Sydfloy Cup. Tigerism will leave for Sydney next week. Mr. Llle has relinquished the lease of Royal Bengal, who will in future run in the colours of his trainer, R. Johnson. Yearling Sales. The National yearling sales Will be held at Trentham to-morrow. Most of the leading studs in the Dominion will be represented in the catalogue. Rider of Jaloux. Mr. P. F. Campbell, owner of Jaloux, was desirous that G. H. Humphries, who, in his opinion, handled the gelding particularly well at Ellerslie, should ride him at Trentham. but evidently there was some confusion on the subject. The trainer. P. V, Mason, has engaged the Auckland rider. J. U. Cammick, who will accordingly have the mount on Jaloux in the Wellington Cup. Jaloux has some keen admirers on the Riecarton tracks for this race, and a repetition, of his form in the event a year ago would make him a most dangerous candidate. Fortunate. An interesting feature of the second day of the Thames Jockey Club's meeting last week was the remarkable luck of K.
