CROQUET COUNCIL Meeting of Delegates The proposal was made at the delegates’ meeting of the ‘New Zealand Croquet Council at Lower Hutt last night that an organis.ing secretary be appointed to the council who would ’devote the whole of his time to the work of helping the game of croquet. The secretary, Mr. A. G. F. Boss, pointed out that the_ present membership was just under 5000, but indications were that there would be an increase before the end of the season. A further 'suggestion was made that the levy be raised to 2/0, the extra 2/- to be devoted to payment for a croquet 'Gazette,” which would be'published monthly during the playi’ng season, and possibly once during the winter months. Airs. AlcLennan (Canterbury South) asked the secretary 'for the cost of the present annual as compared with the cost of the proposed annual, and pointed out that it had been proved that the majority of the players did not require either a “Gazette” or an “Annual.” The proposed “Gazette” was for the few players who wanted trophies and tournaments, while the great majority played croquet only for the game’s sake. Alts. McLennan opposed any alterations in the annual and anv increase in the levy. On behalf of the Wellington association Mrs. Austin considered that the time was not opportune for an increase in the levy, and several delegates agreed with her. Mrs. Austin went on to suggest that an appeal should be made to the loyalty of associations asking for monetary contributions, and a 'resolution to this effect was passed. After some discussion, the proposals were dropped. The motion of Mrs. Austin, “That the three open championships be decided on uniform lines throughout New Zealand by tbe playing of the best of three games.” was carried unanimously.. Delegates present were: Airs. Keesing, Auckland : Air. Alanagh, Auckland South ; Mrs. Scandrett. Canterbury; Mrs. McLennan, Canterbury South; Mrs. AV atkins, Hawke’s Bay; Airs. Simpson. Maiiawatu; Airs. Acheson, Nelson; Mrs. Palmer Southland; Airs. Clark, Taranaki; Mrs Masters. Taranaki South; Airs. Wakelv, Wairarapa ; Airs. Austin, M cllington; and Airs. Gilbert, West Coast. Much business remains to be done, and the meeting was adjourned until to-night.
