NEW GOLF LINKS

Nine-hole Course at Waitarere CLEAR FAIRWAYS: NO ROUGH The scheme to make Waitarere the most attractive beach in the Dominion includes a nine-hole golf course on two hundred acres of ideal golfing country. Waitarere is 33 miles from Palmerston North, and nine miles from Levin, and the golf course is, therefore, accessible to players from all parts of the lower half of the North Island. There is plenty of room for development, and the humble little nine-hole links may yet blossom out into a national course. The nine-hole course has been laid out to the best advantage by that experienced golf architect Mr. J. R. Galloway, professional to the Manawatu Golf Club. The fairways lie along the troughs of natural valleys with sloping ridges, an admirable feature which was sought at great expense in the design of Gleneagles in Scotland. The course at Waitarere is tricky and difficult, and in the opinion of golfing experts it can be made into a real championship course—the best in the Southern Hemisphere—at very little expense. There are clear fairways with a beautiful sward and no rough. Some few natural sand bunkers already exist. Greens have been laid out under expert supervision, and teeing grounds constructed on nice plateaus for driving. Not too severely undulating, the course is an interesting one, situated in a perfect basin, find well protected all round from winds, which frequently sweep other courses in the Dominion. The course is about a quarter of a mile from the beach, and water for the greens is obtainable at a depth of four feet. Ultimately, it is hoped to develop the area as a national course. The services of a professional (Mr. R. Hatch) are available at all times to players.
