THE RACING WORLD

TRENTHAM PROSPECTS Runners Fit and Well A NEW LADY OWNER Notes and Comments (By “’The Watcher.”) The rain that fell yesterday at Trentham will do the track the world of good. There were smiles oh the faces of trainers, who were beginning to worry about the usual summer soreness, and hard tracks, and it is unlikely that the rain will continue long enough to do more than take the sting out of the ground and put the going in perfect order. Lightweight Possible. Lordly Knight, winner of the sprint event on the concluding day of the Auckland meeting, was not sent against the watch at Trentham yesterday morning, but he showed himself to be a good mover in the task allotted him. Like most of the Paladins, he does not carry much .superfluous flesh, but he is well muscled up and fit for his racing. He figured as the winner of the Bowen Handicap, six furlongs, on the concluding day of the recent Auckland meeting, beating Greek Gold by three lengths and a half in Imin. 13sec. He was riddn by A. Eastwood, who will have the mount on him at Trentham. Bloodshed is by Solfcrino from Raid, by Rokeby from Sortie, by Vanguard. and was sold in January, 1928, on behalf if Mr. G. Reid, of Rotherham, to Mr. Wilson for 70 guineas. She was then in foal to Paladin, and Lordly Knight was the production. ' Ohawa Pair.

J H. Jefferd, who is now training a few' of Mr. T. H. Lowry’s horses, has brought Courtyard and Chrysology to the Wellington meeting. Chrysology is still a member of R. Alexander’s team at Greenmeadows, but is in Jefferd’s charge for the meeting. Favoured for Cup.

Gold Trail exercised on the Trentham tracks yesterday morning with P. Atkins in the sadde, who will ride her in the Wellington Cup. Gold Trail has developed into a big solid filly, and she fills the eye as being exceptionally fit and well. She is finding a lot of favour for the Cup race, which has so far never been won by a three-year-old filly since Wellington established itself at Trentham. All Have Done Well.'

Very satisfactory work has been done by Dr. Louisson’s horses The Quorn, Gay Crest and Tout le Mond since they have been at Trentham. Without recording anything sensational in the way of times, The Quorn’s sprint efforts have been accomplished in solid, consistent style, and he is a very fit horse. He has also on each occasion carried plenty of weight. Gay Crest has worked well, and his final effort yesterday with Tout le Mond on the grass was the best of their week’s trials. To judge him on private displays one would hot suspect his recent inability to show public form, and it may be that he is on the verge of his proper form once more. Tout le Mond has come through his final touches very satisfactorily. He is fit and well, and there is nothing to prevent him putting up a good showing in the Wellington Cup. In Tip-Top Order.

Autopay, who is one of the popular candidates for sprint honours on Thursday, has progressed well since his holiday successes. He is at the top of his form and could easily have improved on any of the times he has recorded on the recent galloping mornings.

In the Mile. Gold Pit, who is engaged in the Anniversary and Telegraph Handicaps on the opening day at Wellington, will start in the niTie race. She will be ridden by L. J. Ellis, who will also be on Merry Peel, Importance and probably Hula Belle.

Riding Engagements. Further riding engagements for the meeting are B. H. Morris on Tahoma and Might; H. D. Robinsfin on Purse: G. J. Jones on Glenvane: G. W. Duncan on Refresher and Glowlight. It is Hard Under Weight. Antique is set a big task in the Wellington Cup, but after his good form at the Auckland meeting he has a host of admirers in the north for his Trentham engagement. It is worth noting, however, that of the twenty-seven Wellington Cups decided at Trentham, only two have been won by horses carrying more than nine stone, Achilles succeeding with 9.4 and Star Stranger with 9.8. Antique heads the list in this week’s race with 9.5. Cup Lightweight. A horse who has not yet been mentioned in connection with the Wellington Cup is Rocket. This son of Day .Comet was second in the New Zealand Derby, finishing from the rear to beat, among others, La Moderne, who was runner-up to Silver Scorn in the New Zealand Oaks. La Moderne finished in front of Gold Trail in the Great Northern Derby, and Gold Trail in turn beat Antique and Concentrate in the Clifford Plate. Presuming that Rocket is a better stayer than La Moderne and Gold Trail, he should not lack for a measure of support for next Thursday’s race, in which he is receiving from Gold Trail all but a stone. He is solid in condition, and his recent track work, although not brilliant, has been solid. A Strong Hand Again. A year ago Riccarton stables captured all the money in the Wellington Cup, Compris winning in record time, with Jaloux and Royal Love in the places. It is too much to expect a repetition of this result on Thursdays but with Concentrate, Great Star, Jaloux, Red Heckle, Tout le Mond, Juniper and Rocket engaged, the southern contingent will again offer strong opposition. They are all in excellent order. Ineligible to Run. The non-arrival from Australia of the necessary papers giving the horse Mungatoon a clearance, prevented the _ gelding from taking his place in the Pipiroa Handicap at the Thames meeting. Mungatoon is owned by Mr. P. A. Swney, of Waihou. In the latter part of last season Mungatoon, then a two-year-old, was sent to Sydney and went into J. T. Jamieson’s stable, winning a race at a minor meeting. Later he returned to Auckland, and his owner took him in hand. Mungatoon next made his appearance at the Waikato November meeting, and won the Taupiri Hack Handicap. At the Takapuna meeting the same month he finished third in the Vauxhall Handicap. As the necessary clearance papers from Australia were pot to hand, Mungatoon was really ineligible to race at either the Waikato or Takapuna meetings. His owner learned of the position subsequently, and wrote to the New Zealand Racing Conference, explaining the position, and received advice that until the papers arrived the horse was not eligible to start in races. She Will Be Welcome. Mr. and Mrs. G. Oakleigh Greenwood, of Christchurch, will visit Wellington for the races and bloodstock sales this week. It is Mrs. Greenwood’s intention to join the ranks of women owners in New Zealand. No Recent Form. Among the acceptors for the first day at Trentham are two Riccarton horses who have been off the scene for some time. Martian Chief, engaged in the Anniversary Handicap, had his last race in the Great Autumn Handicap, while Zeebrugge, who figures in the Ruapehu Handicap, has been in retirement for about a year. Each of them may show an early return to useful form. 50,000 DOLLAR RACE Weights at Agua Caliente By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received Jan. 17, 7 p.m.). Agua Caliente, Jan. 16. Plucky Play, one of the country’s outstanding stake-winning horses, has been allotted top weight, Ost., for the 50,000 Dollar Handicap, one mile and a quarter, to be run on March 26. The New Zealander, Pillow Fight, is given Sst. 51b. He is expected to arrive about February 1. The English horse, Boy Painter, will carry Sst. CUP TOPWEIGHT Antique’s Consistent Form The good and consistent form displayed by Antique at the Auckland Cup meeting has' earned him pride of place in the handicaps for the Wellington Cup (says the ‘‘New Zealand Herald”). The son of Tonbridge heads the weights with 9.5, a solid impost, but one which Antique has shown he is well able to carry. He was third in the Auckland Cup with 8.10, won the Summer Cup with 9.1, and was third in the A.R.C. Handicap with 9.9. In addition to these three handicap events he contested the Clifford Plate, in which he finished second to Gold Trail with 9.3. The Wellington Cup is run over the same distance as the A.R.C. Handicap, and in letting Antique off with 41b. less than he carried In the latter event, Mr. Coyle appears to have summed up the position correctly. Red Sun, who won the A.R.C. Handicap with 7.1, has been given 7.6 in the Wellington Cup. which means that Antique will meet the Trenthamtrained horse on 91b. better terms. As there was less than a length between them at Ellerslie, the concession made to Antique should give him a fine chance of turning the table upon Red Sun. FIXTUKBS, January 19, 21, 23—Wellington R.C. RAIN AT TRENTHAM Tracks Greatly Benefit SOME SEMI-FINAL RUNS Several Visitors Take Part (By “The Watcher.”) The most important item at Trentham yesterday morning was the rain. It_ commenced with light showers, but at o a.in. it was coming down steadily. It eased off later, but light rain fell more or less continuously throughout the pre-breakfast, work. It was a very welcome change from the hot dry conditions of the past few weeks, and provided it stops prior to the racing it will be of the utmost benefit to the tracks. Tlie watering which has been carried out has kept the course proper nice and green, but no artificial means .can equal a good downpour, and by the time it had eased off sufficiently yesterday for trainers to make a start it had taken the sting out of the grass tracks and most of the fast work was done on the inside trial in preference to the plough. By the end of the morning the horses were getting below the surface a bit. but the going was excellent. Visitors Appear. Several over-night visitors put in an appearance, but there was not much interesting galloping. Red Sun did strong pace work. Autopay, picked up at the_top of the straight, ran half a mile in 51sec. This gallop was on the plough. Might and Clangor took a second less on the grass, time which was equalled by Courtyard, who went alone. Courtyard blew a bit afterwards. The Quorn Goes Well. The Quorn went off slowly from the half-mile mark, and took 14sec. for the first furlong. He hit out well in the straight, recording 49 4-ssec. for the four. It was a good gallop. He appreciated the sting out of the going. Flower aud Purse took Imin. lisec. for six furlongs, the former doing it better. Gay Crest Pleases. Gay Crest and Tout le Mond ran a mile. They took 51 4-ssec. for. the first half, and ran the last four similarly, recording Imin. 43jsec. for the full journey. The last seven was particularly good, Imin. 29sec. Both went well, and Gay Crest, with the outside running, worked like his old self. My Own Beaten. Joie de Vai and My Own paired over a mile and a quarter. They took Imin. 47j sec. for the last mile, the last half in 52 j sec. Joie de Vai had it well on the Hawke's Bay mare at the finish. Lyrical finished in front of Palace at the end of seven in Imin. 32}sec. Local Youngsters. Dole and Pegged Exchange were the only youngsters to work on the course proper. Dole did another steady gallop from the new six furlongs post, and Pegged Exchange came down the straight four. Pegged Exchange was recorded at 49sec., but misty rain made timing practically impossible, and in any case they were not after making time. Both went well. Hacks Sprint. Good Hunting and Aiguille ran four in 50sec., both going -well. Broken Rule, alone, was responsible for a similar effort. Among the visitors to put in an appearance were J. O’Neill with Orapai and Glowlight; R. Barlow with Refresher and Glenvane: J. H. Jefferd with Courtyard and Chrysology; A. E. Neale with Diatomous. Broken Rule, and Bon Rnpide; W. McKinnon with Mv Own ; G. W. B. Greene with Tahoma; W. IL Wilson with Lordly Knight; and J. M. Cameron with Gold Trail. All did pace'work except Courtyard and My Own.
