MAN DROWNED

Small Boat Swamped Off Palmer Head COMPANION RESCUED As a result of the swamping of a small boat off Palmer Head late yesterday afternoon, Mr. Ernest Edward Jones, aged 35, single, of Turakina Bay, was drowned. Accompanied by his brother-in-law, Mr. Joseph McCrohon, of Breaker Bay, Mr. Jones was out in a small boat off Palmer Head. It is understood that they were engaged in setting fishing nets.

Details of the tragedy are meagre, but it is believed that when the boat was swamped Mr. Jones lost his hold of the craft. The plight of Mr. McCrohon, who clung to the boat, was observed by three men in a boat in the vicinity, and by the exercise of caution they were able to get him aboard their boat and take him ashore. The accident occurred about five o'clock. The sea at that time, however, and even later was too rough to allow of efforts to recover the body. Should the weather be favourable this will be attempted this morning.
