CHRISTMAS CHEER

Limited Number of Hampers APPEAL FOR GIFTS In view of the many calls which have been, and are being, made on citizens, the executive of the Smith Family has decided not to launch an aggressive “drive” for funds at the present time, but to rely solely upon voluntary contributions. •

The Smith Family and the Returned Soldiers’ Association are working in close co-operation, but both are faced with a tremendous task in attempting to meet the demands being made on their respective organisations. The Smith Family has over 2500 families on its books, each of whom is in dire need. In. addition to these families over 2000 unemployed relief workers have already made application for assistance at Christmas time, and applications are pouring in daily.

An appeal is made to those who can afford to do so to take some deserving family under their care on Christmas Day and see that adequate meals are provided, also some gift for the children.

A certain number of hampers will be distributed this year, but the actual number, and size, will depend upon the number of voluntary contributions. The families to whom hampers will lie provided have already been decided upon, and the Smith Family desires to make it known that further applications, unless spe- ' eiallv recommended by Smith Family subscribers, cannot be entertained. Arrangements are being made to give a special treat to the children of all relief workers. This will take place simultaneously in the De Luxe and Paramount Theatre’s on Thursday of next week, and each child will receive a gift as he or she leaves the theatre. The secretary of the Smith Family is desirous of receiving the names of those who are prepared to provide a Christmas dinner for some needy family on Christmas Day; also contributions of toys," groceries or cash donations. These may be left at the Smith Family headquarters, 95 Wakefield Street (next Public Library), oH-it. telephone call to. 42—322 will result in any parcels being called for.
