Machine Fails to Rise
MISHAP AT SOURABAYA Sourabaya, Dec. 13. Captain Hans Bertram had a fine trip from Bima to Sourabaya yesterday. He started from Bima at 2.30 in the afternoon and landed here at 6.30 p.m., local time. He stated that the flight had hitherto beeu hampered only by strong head winds.
Attempting to take off at four o’clock this morning for Medan, Sumatra, the aeroplane, too heavily loaded, failed to rise, ran into a ditch at the end of the field, and crashed. The landing gear and propeller were smashed. Captain Bertram and Mr. Allen were uninjured. A stowaway was discovered by the mechanic after leaving Bima. and was handed over to the police on arrival here. STOWAWAY FROM DARWIN (Received, Dec. 13, 7 p.m.) Darwin, Dec. 13. The stowaway on Captain Bertram’s plane is believed to be Jack Dodson, 20 years old, who was reported missing from an unemployed camp after midnight on Sunday. No watchman was guarding the plane.
FLYER OVERDUE No News of Mrs. Mollison for Twenty-two Hours (Received Dec. 14, 0.30 a.m.) London. Dee. 13. Twenty-two hours have passed without news of Mrs. J. A. Mollison (Amy Johnson), who was last reported to be flying strongly over Loanda en route to Diiala, where she was due yesterday.
