NEED FOR REVISION

School Curriculum HEADMASTER’S VIEWS A survey of school curriculum was urged by Mr. W. A. Armour, principal of Wellington College, when presenting his annual report at the prize-giving ceremony last evening. “Different bodies of teachers at annual conferences, in a hurried manner, endeavour to grapple with some of the major educational problems,” Mr. Armour said, “but they accomplish little because of lack of time, lack of full knowledge, lack of data, lack of incentive from those in control. “It seems to me that for this reason, and especially in the present chaotic condition of the world, a pressing need with us is to have set up a panel of representative educational experts who could make an unhurried but exhaustive survey of every part of our educational system, not from the administrative point of view, but from the truly educational point of view—that is, from the point of view of studies to be undertaken and the methods to be adopted. “If, as many fear, our education is along wrong lines, then the prospects for the future in this country are poor indeed; and no time should be lost in finding the right path to be traversed. It is for this reason that I have already expressed the opinion that much good might possibly be derived from the recommendation of the Economy Commission that a National Board of Education should be set up for the educational control of this country, leaving to the-Department of Education administrative control. My proviso, of course, is that the board be composed of experts widely versed in the various phases of education.”
