THE RACING WORLD

SILVER SCORN Weight at Auckland NOTES AND COMMENTS A. E. Ellis Resumes Work (By ‘'The Watcher.”) A good deal of interest attached to the weight that Silver Scorn would get in a handicap event. It is unusual to get such a crack iu a handicap, as they are generally reserved for class races. In the Christmas Handicap, run at Auckland on Boxing Day, over a mile, she has been given 8.5. It is Sih over weight-t'or-age, and another filly, Gold Trail, is in at 3lu over weight-for-age, while the lopweight, Cricket Bat, has the standard, 0.0, for a 4-year-old. It cannot be said that) Silver Scorn is badly treated. Eight bounds above wei'ght-for-age may look a fair handicap, and so it would be against a weight-for-age field, but few of her opponents arc up to that standard. By comparison we may turn to the 9.9 given Commendation in the Riccarton Handicap, 9 furlongs, on New Zealand Cup Day, which, is 2Glb above weight-for-age, and nearly two months earlier in the season. Commendation won, beating a good horse in Footfall, to whom he was conceding half a stone. At that stage Commendation had not won a Derby, although he had first-class two-year-old form, and had dead-heated in the Great Northern Guineas with Dysander, and had beaten Seatown in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas. On her record Silver Scorn is well-in in the Christmas Handicap.

Ellis in Saddle Again. . . A. E. Ellis, after being on the retired list since August, as the result of trouble entailed by a broken arm, is again in action. His arm appears to be quite strong, and he was out riding work at. Riccarton at the end of last week. He will go north for the Auckland meeting, where he wifi ride Fast Passage. Cricket Bat and Fracas for Sir Charles Clifford, while he has secured a Derby mount on Jonathan.

Sister to Headmaster. The latest addition to the New I lymduth trainer Barlow's team, is the two-year-old Headmistress, sister to Headmaster, who, like him, will carry the colours of her breeder. Mr. IV. S. Glenn. Though as yet on the small side, she is one of the nuggety .type, being very solidly built (says the “News ). So far she has not been seriously tried, but being by Chief Ruler from Fillette, a mare who was speedy herself, and’ came from the same family that produced ’Miss Pat. it will be strange if she cannot gallop. She will probably be given a run at the Christmas meeting at New Plymouth.

Scratched. , , , ~ , Protomint was scratched for the Auckland Cup last Wednesday. His withdrawal will not occasion much concern, as he has no serious claims to Cup form.

A Lightweight Possibility. Tout le Mond has come through a solid preparation during the last few months. .He has done plenty of good track work, while he has improved steadily with each race. As a result he should be a very lit horse for bis Ellerslie engagements, and with his light weight he will keep the opposition busy in the Auckland Cup.

In Good Form. Red Heckle has done some great work on the Riccarton tracks lately (says “Argus”). His mile gallop on Thursday was a brilliant effort, and though not out to 'make time on Saturday, he moved along at-an even pace for nine furlongs, giving further evidence of his good condition. He has' taced well during the last few months, and he will be hard to dispose of in the Manawatu Cup on Boxing Day.

Shatter’s Mishap. Shatters mishap at Riccarton on Saturday morning was an unfortunate affair, which may interfere with his holiday programme (says the “Times’). When he and Silver Ring took off suddenly, when going on to the track to gallop, they careered toward the sheds. Silver Rnig got. on to Shatter’s near hind fetlock, inflicting a cut. F. D. Joues gave hi? horse immediate attention, but when he got home he appeared to be moving stiffly. The full effect of the accident will not be known for a day or two. Tt is possible that he will have to be eased up, in which ca?e he may not be able, to fulfil his Auckland engagements, .but as the tendon is not cut Jones is hopeful that there will be no. serious consequences. •

Without a Backer. The occasions on which a horse wins a race without- having a backer are few and far between, but it was difficult io find where anyone had invested on Calverhero iu the first division of the Maiden Melter Handicap at Menangle Park last week (savs the “Sydney Morning Herald I. The gelding was always one of the lenders and he successfully stalled off late runs by Leone aud Arrest. Leone also was neglected in the ring, but she had supporters on the totalisator, and, in consequence of no ticket being taken out on the winner, her dividend for second was increased, while Arrest, who had backers at straight out, paid longer odds for a place on the totalisator. Had one ticket been taken out on Calverhero. the return for 10/- would have been £B4/15/b.

Won on Protest. The Paper Money—Bonny Helen male Bouuv Note is one of the best horses in Western Australia. Her latest success was on December 3, when at the \\ .A.L.G. meeting she was beaten half a length in the York Handicap, one mile and th ree furlongs, but won the race on a protest.

Be A te D. Webster backed My Talisman to win the De/ember Mile at Epsom (Victoria) last Wednesday, but he was beaten a head by the third favourite, who conceded just 11b. short of 2st. My Talisman was fifth favourite.

J, Pike Appeals. , J. Pike last week lodged an appeal against the decision of the stipendiary stewards at Rosehill, suspending him fot three months.

Crack Beaten. .. West Australia s crack three-year-old Olympian, by Pantheon, who has . been cai-rying all before him lately, and is regarded as having a mortgage on the M .A.

Derby at Christmas, was unexpectedly beaten at the W.A.T.C. meeting on December 3. An outsider. Jolly Friar, beat him rather comfortably in the Strickland Stakes, a nine-furlong weight-for-age race.

Veterinary Skill. Nowadays, veterinary surgery is tierform itig ’seeming miracles. Several months ago Nappatara, who is a halfbrother by Trivalve to Versine. Roc. and Petunia, reared on the training tracks and fractured a pelvis. This usually means the end of a horse’s career, but as in the case of Denis Boy, efforts were made to save him. The Australian veterinary surgeon. .Mr. S. O. Wood, was called, and the result was a scientific achievement that wiil long be remembered. Mr. Wood took complete control of Nappatara, and for three months the horse did not leave his stall. During that time he spent nearly six weeks in slings. Nappatara will now be placed in work again at Caulfield by his trainer. A. Spank, the prominent rider of a lew years ago, and a nephew of R. Lewis. Experienced racing men who have inspected the horse have been impressed by the success achieved by Mr. Wood. They consider that it is one if the most miraculous cases of veterinary treatment they have seen It will be interesting to watch the future racing career of Nappatara. Denis Boy was. for a time, thought to be a hopeless case, but since he splintered the bone in his leg he has won the Metropolitan and the Cantala Stakes. Aga Khan. Aga Khan has engagements at Auckland at Christmas, and as he is working the reverse way at Hawera that may be taken as an indication that he will go .to Ellerslie. Aga Khan has been unlucky in his recent engagements at Riccarton and Feilding. Division Likely. .... Thirty-six horses have been handicapped for the Robinson Handicap at Ellerslie, where the safety number at the seven furlongs barrier is 27. Monastic will not be an acceptor, but there will have to eight other defections if n division is to be avoided. In past years, this race has generally had to be got off in two divisions. Antique Doing Well. The Auckland Cup candidate Antique is progressing satisfactorily in his work, and all continuing well he will be a starter. Antique is getting over his long-distance work very creditably. He is a good-class horse, aiid even if he misses the Cup he will be a tough opponent, on one or two of the other days of the meeting. Fast Passage. Fast Passu-e has stood up to some useful work during the past week, without her weak leg causing any special anxiety. It is probable she will have another gallop before she is shipped north on Thursday, but at present it looks as if she had a reasonable prospect of getting through her Auckland Cup preparation. Manawatu Acceptances. Acceptances for the first day of the MaYiawatu Racing Club’s summer meeting, to bo held on December 26. 21, and 29, also final payment for the 29th Palmerston North Stakes, will close on Friday at 9 p.m. Taranaki Acceptances. AN UNUSUAL PROTEST Third Horse Placed First The stipendiary stewards in Victoria have never been asked to settle a more difficult problem than that which they were called upon to decide after the Welter Purse at. Moonee Valley on December 3 (says a Melbourne writer). The finish of the race was one of the most exciting for a long time. Three horses passed the post almost in line, aud the judge decided that Metallurgy and Wilts had finished a dead-heat for first place, witl.i Pearl Fisher a head away third. But just before the finish Metallurgy had hung in rather badly, and. interfering with Wilts, had forced that horse over on Pearl Fisher. Consequently a double pro. test was entered. One was by J. O’Brien, rider of Wilts, agaiust Metallurgy, and the other was by J. Buckley, trainer of Pearl Fisher, against Wilts and Metallurgy.. There is no doubt that Pearl Fisher was by far the worst sufferer, but a successful protest by, a third horse was without. precedent, iff Melbourne. The stewards eventually decided to place Pearl Fisher first, Wilts second, aud Metallurgy third, htetallurgy was very heavily backed. He was not well placed most of the way, but. his finishing effort was really good. Pearl Fisher, for whom there was money at. remunerative odds, went to the front near the half-mile post, and Wilts was nearest him at the straight entrance.
