Fresh Markets
Sir,—Politicians and others are turning hopeful eyes to the teeming millions of China as a market for our produce. A bright idea was recently expressed at a South Island Farmers’ Union meeting, that if everv Chinaman was to wear one pair of woollen socks a year it would mean prosperity to the sheep-farmers. It is a simple matter to bring this happy condition about. All that is necessary is to declare about 50 days out of 3bo to be fifths of November—Guy I’awkes days—when everyone in the British Kmnire should let off a few Chinese doublebangers. This would. quickly result in putting al) our Celestial friends into the position to enjoy the comfort ot woollen socks and maybe an occasional dish of New Zealand lamb. Trade, after all. is a two-way busiuess.-I am. Greenmeadows. December 10.
