TWO WICKETS—567

Christ’s College Makes Cricket History J. BYRNE 208 NOT OUT By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Dec. 12. The most outstanding performance ever put up by a Christ’s College cricket team was recorded to-day during the course of the annual match with Otago Boys’ High School. Three records went by the board. The first wicket partnership produced 344, easily beating the previous record of 214 put up in 1917 against Christchurch Boys’ High School by R. Blunt and T. AV. Tothill. P. J. Byrne batted solidly all day for 208 not out, thus beating Blunt’s record score of 204 in the match previously mentioned, and the College team declared at stumps with two down for 567. Otago won the toss and made the mistake of putting College iu first on a wicket which, though sodden early, was fairly dry at the time play commenced, and was later dead easy. The scores are as follow : —

COUNCIL The New Zealand Cricket Council has embarked upon a campaign to encourage bowling among boys, and invited the management committee of the Wellington Cricket Association last evening to assist in the idea. The council advised that at the annual meeting of delegates of the New Zealand Cricket Council a resolution was passed affirming the importance of encouragement of bowlers, and recommending to each association affiliated to the council that some step should be taken to promote improved bowling among young cricketers. A movement of this nature, if made general, might be expected, the council stated, to have far-reaching effects in the improvement of trundling in New Zealand, and might conceivably be the cause of good young bowlers in time being brought out to represent New Zealand, much to the advantage of the standard of cricket in the Dominion. “Should you initiate a scheme with any novel features which are found to be successful, the New Zealand Cricket Council will appreciate a communication giving the main points of the idea, so that anything of benefit to other associations may be passed on. “For your information in the meantime, the Canterbury Cricket Association has this year appointed a coach whose special duties are to instruct young players in bowling, and already much advantage is considered to have accrued from the appointment.” “The council will welcome an exchange of ideas on the subject.” The letter was received.
