VETERAN PASTOR
Mr. D. Nield, aged 89 Pastor David Nield, of Moera, will celebrate his eighty-ninth birthday tomorrow. He was born in Lancashire, England, in 3843. He began work as a “half-timer” in a cotton mill at the age of eight. He studied in the evenings, improving his education, and at the age of 20 he was selected from 40 applicants for the post of secretary for the “ragged” schools at Oldham. In 1873 he went to the United States, where he worked with a shipbuilding firm for three years before returning to England. He travelled extensively for ten years. Mr. Nield established a vegetarian restaurant at Leeds, and was later a ship missionary at the London docks. He landed in Auckland in 1897.
