BREAK-UP CEREMONY
Lyall Bay School The Assembly Hall of the Lyall Bay School was crowded last evening when the annual prize-giving and breaking-up ceremony was held. The proceedings opened with a community sing, in which the parents and children joined with enthusiasm. Mr. H. M. Harris, chairman of the school committee, in summing up the past activities, mentioned that a movement was afoot for the breaking-up of the school and the sending of the senior boy pupils elsewhere. A letter of appreciation of the record of the school, from Mr. A. Sando, was read. Mr. O. A. Banner thanked his staff for their able co-operation throughout the year, and expressed pleasure at the results of the year's work. Mr. R. .Semple, M.P. for the district, sketched briefly the work carried ou by Parliament for the last few days, and touched on the present education system. Mr. F. W. Boyd, president of the Home and School Parents’ Association, presented the prizes to the best sports, both boys and girls. Rev. Orange presented the cups to the champion athletic boy and girl. Trophies were presented as follows: — Dux of school, Carol Ayers (medal) ; best all-round sports, boys, J. Hastings (cricket bat), girls, June Cornell (tennis racket) ; champion athlete, boys, Frank Gootch (cup), girls, Claire Gilmour (cup). Bouquets of flowers were presented to Mrs. Semple, Mrs. O. A. Banner, Miss F. Roberts, and Miss B. Conway. During the evening Ruth Stone, Rama Topp and Vera Gilmour, recited, and Muriel Harris contributed a song. Supper was served by the Home, and School Parents’ Association Committee.
