Flour at £ll Per Ton (From “The Dominion,” Dec. 13, 1907.) The welcome news was received yesterday to tlie effect that the Flour Millers’ Association had decided to reduce the price of flour by 30/- per ton, thus making the price £ll f.o.b, in the south. This is very cheering news indeed, as it must induce reduction in the price of bread, which for some time has been selling at 4d. the 21b. loaf. • ♦ • It is suggested that some councillor should move at the next meeting of the Wellington City Council: “That in the opinion of this council the time has arrived when the matter of street scavenging should be attended to.” Such a resolution would have the approval of the entire community. Having wood-blocked the principal streets, and made spasmodic efforts to obtain boys to sweep them, the council has evidently abandoned the job as hopeless.

General Dukmasoff presides over the court-martial in St. Petersburg, trying Generals Stoessel, Reusa, Fock and Smirnoff on a charge of illegally and dishonourably surrendering Port Arthur. One hundred and fifty witnesses will be examined, Including Admiral Wirens and General Gregorovitch.

The burning of the Parliamentary Buildings has created a feeling of uneasiness in regard to some of the other largo structures belonging to the Government. It is rumoured that one of the Ministers has received an anonymous letter containing the information that the Government Buildings are to be burned down. Yesterday the unusual sight was witnessed of a permanent Artilleryman pacing up and down the grounds in’front of the buildings;'and last evening two bell-tents were noticed at the rear of the grounds in the shelter of some trees.

Lieutenant Shackleton. R.N., commander of the British Antarctic expedition, arrived by the Maheno from Sydney yesterday. He is still, however, in want of some funds —about £4ooo—- — this amount he believes he will have no difficulty in raising in Australia and New Zealand.
