Unemployment and Art Unions
Sir.—l could not help reading with great interest, a letter published in your issue of December S, signed "Unemployed,” concerning art unions to aid the unemployed. We do not seem to get any nearer solution of this problem. In fact, tbe position appears to be growing worse. In the past few years many art unions have been held, but we notice, on looking back, that these have been for the benefit of various sports clubs, and occasional! v lo raise funds for our hospitals and ainbulaiKTS, but never one to alleviate the trying and distressing problems of unemployment. If au art union were organised, for the benefit of the unemployed, mon, women and young people, surely the Government would grant a permit for this urgent cause. If an art union permit can be issued for c )' cu sports clubs, there appears no possible reason why one should not be granted to i venture, which seems to be one <>i the most likely ways of bringing our country back to prosperity. —I am, <^, e *’ r>VXN Ohakune. December 9.
