TRUST MONEY STOLEN
Solicitor Takes Over £2OOO
MONEY UNACCOUNTED FOR By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Dec. 12. A sentence of reformative detention for a term not exceeding four years was passed by Mr. Justice Smith upon William Prust Stewart, solicitor, aged 38., who admitted stealing £2lOl of trust moneys.
Iu the course of a plea for tbo prisoner, counsel said that Stewart was not given to riotous living. His Honour: If be is of good character and did not live riotously, where has the £2OOO gone? Counsel: I am quite unable to answer that. I can only express my confidence that accused has not had the benefit of it. He was the first; person to tell the Law Society of the shortage. His Honour remarked that he supposed the loss iu the ordinary course would fall upon other practitioners. A substantial fact was' that, the prisoner had made away with over £2OOO and that none of it had been accounted for. He could only impose substantial deterrent punishment.
