VINES DEFEATED
Crawford’s Superb Play VICTORIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS (Received Dec. 11, 6.30 p.m.) Melbourne, Dec. 10. The Victorian tennis championship tournament was continued yesterday. In the final of the men's singles, J. Crawford defeated Ellsworth Vines (U.S.A.), I—6, 6—4, 6—4, 2—6, 6—4. Crawford played superbly, with magnificent volleying. Vines lacked his usual accuracy, his cannonball deliveries meeting with hard returns, while Crawford’s volleys forced him into errors. In the semi-finals yesterday. Vines beat Sproule, 5—7, 5—7, 7 —5, 6—2, 6 —2. Crawford beat Hopman, 6—3. The men’s doubles semi-finals resulted :—Allison and Van Ryn defeated Hopman and Sproule, 9—7, 6—4, 6—4. Vines and Gledhill defeated Crawford and Moon, 4—6, 6—3, 4—6. 7—5, 6—4. The final will be played on Monday.
