COUNTRY MATCH

English XI at Wagga Wagga CAPABLE YOUNG BATS Disconcerting Conditions (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Received Dec. 11, 6.30 p.m.) Sydney, Dee. 11. The English cricketers began a match at Wagga Wagga to-day against representatives of the Southern Districts in line hot weather. Batting first the country team scored 226. England had' one wicket down for 44 when stumps were drawn. Following are the teams:— ’’England: Wyatt (captain), Pataudi, Brown, Sutcliffe, Tate, Verity, Bowes, Duckworth, Ames, Mitchell, Paynter. Southern Districts: M. Cusick (captain). S. Sadlier, S. Sly, H. Flood, R. Hutchins. R. McCabe, L. Bennett, W. Rumble, S. Josselyn, R. James, J. Maher.

Wyatt won the toss and sent the Country team to the wickets. A local high school boy, S. Sly, batted finely for 67 not out.

. Except Mitchell, who did really well, the bowlers were not in the least dangerous. The Englishmen found the ground bumpy, and it spoiled good fielding. Flies and heat were equally disconcerting.

Bennett, a local youth, got his runs in line style. He showed good driving and freedom of action. The scores follow: —

Arthur Mailey, writing in the “Daily Telegraph,” says: "We must have a good side. If we can afford to drop kippax, it seems a pity to call back Ironmonger and Oxenham, when we have Fleetwood-Smith and Hird, both young players of promise.” The “Herald's” cricket writer says: "It would have required some imagination on the part of the selectors to have included Fleetwood-Smith, but more imagination may be required before the series is completed, with the solid Englishmen apparently hot greatly worried by mechanically accurate bowling they are called upon to face. The unorthodoxy of Fleetwood-Smith may yet prove a valuable asset to Australia.”

ENGLISH CRITICISM London, Dec. 9. The critics generally praise the coolness of the Australian selectors. The '‘Evening News” says that probably the last has been seen of Kippax and Grimmett may be given a rest, as the batsmen temporarily have the better of him.
