HUTT ROAD CONCRETE

Cracks Appear in New Surface Cracks have appeared in the new parts of the widened Hutt Road between Wellington and Ngahauranga. When the two 8-foot strips were added to the breadth of the road last year the bitumen course was laid upon a 6-inch bed of concrete. In order to provide for expansion and contraction half-inch joints were provided in the concrete every ten feet or so. Presumably there has been some working of the concrete bed through the influence of temperature, as the cracks in the bitumen surface are showing in a line with the expansion joints in the concrete floor. This development presents a problem in road construction where the two materials are used in layers. It is the accepted practice that expansion joints must be left in concrete to avoid buckling in mid-summer temperature. However, bitumen is not difficult to repair.
