WOMAN’S ORDEAL

Fall Down 50-f oot Bank LANDS IN THE WATER Escape from Serious Injury Dominion Special Service. Auckland, Nov. 20. After rolling 50 feet down a precipitous bank, and then falling over 20 feet in a deep pool, narrowly missing a sharp, rock, a woman, who was climbing down a cliff overlooking a small bay at Waiheke Island, had a fortunate eseape'from serious injury this morning. She escaped with scalp wounds, a deep cut over one eye, extensive bruises, and shock. The injured woman, Mrs. Julia Mundy, agqd 42, of Ponsonby, was one of a party who visited Mataitai. Waiheke Island. Her husband has visited the island frequently during the past 15 months to fish. After leaving the steamer the party walked around the cliffs above the bay, a distance of over a mile, and then commenced to climb down a precipitous bank to a pool between some rocks. There was no track, and Mr. Mundy descended first, his wife following him. After a short distance Mrs. Mundy lost her footing in the dry grass, and commenced to slide down the bank. Before any of the others could grasp her she was disappearing down the steep slope, about 50 feet in length to a straight drop into a rocky pool below. By the time she reached the edge of the straight drop, she was falling at a fast, rate, and shot across the rock into the water, 15 deep deep. Had the tide not been full, she must have received severe injury as the pool is almost dry at low water. Mrs. Mundy remained conscious throughout and, although dazed, was able to cling to the rock after she had fallen in the pool . She was then brought to safety by her husband. On account of her bruises she had to be helped up the slope again, and was assisted around the foreshore. Her husband obtained assistance from the crew of a launch. Mrs. Mundy was subsequently taken to Auckland, admitted to hospital, where her condition this evening was reported as being satisfactory.
