FIRE AT EASTBOURNE
Brigade Makes Fast Save GOOD WATER PRESSURE Fire Which broke out in a large wooden workshop at Orura Street, Eastbourne, >at about 2.30 o’clock on Saturday afternoon, was quickly suppressed by the Eastbourne volunteer brigade, thanks to the high pressure water supply recently Installed iu the district. In the past fires have resulted in the total destruction of the premises concerned, almost without exception, but Saturday’s outbreak showed the value of an adequate water supply. The building was owned by Mr. Sydney Jackson, and was occupied by Mr. James Drummond, who lived in the upper portion, and used the ground floor as a carpenter’s workshop. The fire is thought to have been caused by a defective oil-stove upstairs, but the alarm was given before the outbreak had spread greatly. The volunteer brigade undoubtedly made a good save, especially in view of the fact that a high wind was blowing at the time. Contents in the upper portion, belonging to Mr. Drummond, which were uninsured, were damaged to the extent of about £l2, while damage to the building, which was covered in the Alliance office by a policy of £BOO, amounted to about £3O.
