Australians at Wickets NINE DOWN FOR 216 Larwood Makes the Ball Fly BRADMAN’S RECKLESSNESS By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. (Received Nov. 20, 6.30 p.m.) Melbourne, Nov. 20. The weather was fine and cool, and the wicket in splendid condition yesterday for the resumption of the cricket match, England v. an Australian team. England continued the first innings, which closed for 282 runs. When stumps were drawn, Australia had nine wickets down for 216. The attendance was 53,000, and the gate receipts, £3600.

Resuming England’s innings, Allen opened brightly. He hit three fours off Ironmonger’s second over and added 20" in ten minutes. Duckworth was content to hang on and batted for an extra twenty-five minutes without scoring. Allen played splendidly in the later staged. He batted for 110 minutes and bit seven boundaries. Nash showed better pace. Australia commenced the first innings at 1 o’clock, runs coming slowly.

Soon after lunch Woodfull received a nasty blow on the chest from Larwood, who was making the ball fly. Woodful was in for seventy-one minutes. Bradman made remarkably clever pulls off Bowes’s bumpers. Bradman was too reckless at times, both in stealing runs, in which he had several narrow escapes, and pulling off balls. He lost his wicket in attempting such a hit. He batted for forty-six minutes and hit four boundaries. O’Brien was stolid but neat. He batted for 158 minutes and hit one four. Three wickets fell for 131. Bowes was then bowling very accurately, and Larwood was maintaining a good pace. Lee gave a bright display for 36 minutes, in which he hit two fours, but the bowlers were definitely on top throughout. Larwood bowled thirteen overs and Bowes fifteen overs, of which two

were maidens. Allen did not bowl owing to a slight strain. Following are the scores: — ENGLAND. First Innings. Wyatt, 1.b.w.. b. Oxenham 29 Sutcliffe, c. Bradman, b. Ironmonger . 87 Pataudi. b.
