SECRET MEETING
President Sees Leaders CRISIS IN GERMANY ( Claims to Chancellorship HITLERITE OPTIMISM (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.' (Received, Nov. 20, 6.30 p.m.) Berlin, Nov. 19. Secrecy has been observed in respect to a conference in which President Hindenburg received Dr. Hugenberg, leader of the Nationalists, Herr Dingeldey, leader of the People’s Party, and Dr. Ludwig Kass, leader of the Centre Party. Later the President had an hour’s conference with Herr Hitler, who afterwards refused to discuss the proceedings beyond saying that it was a good beginning. It is believed that the President desired Herr Hitler to ascertain what support he could obtain in the formation of a cabinet. The Hitlerites are • optimistic as to the outcome of Herr Hitler’s claim to the Chancellorship. It is rumoured in other quarters that Herr Hitler is chastened as the result of loss of seats in the recent election and may not be as stubborn as formerly. Moreover, he fears the raising of the age of enfranchisement from twenty to twenty-five, which is certain if the von Papen regime is perpetuated. It is understood that President Hindenburg is determined not to have another dissolution of the Reichstag with-
out substantial reasons or an alteration in the Constitution without the full approval of the people. A woman found in the corridor of the Chancellery admitted having a dagger concealed in her clothes and that she was determined to use it to compel Dr. von Papen to promise to change his policy. She was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment.
