Headgear for Postmen From “The Dominion,” November 21, 1907. The khaki-coloured slouch-hat of the postman, born of the jingoism of eight years ago, is doomed, and not before its time, as it never was a neat type of headgear for an official. The Post-master-General has practically decided upon the adoption of the postman’s shako as worn by the letter-carriers in the British service. « « ,» The price of laud in Otaki still continues to rise, and a section of several acres in the vicinity of the railway station is said to have changed hands at £lOO per acre. The ten shillings a week two-or three-roomed house has almost disappeared in the city of Wellington. The reason is not hard to find. There are very few city frontages nowadays that rule under £lO a foot, and twenty-foot frontage at that rate would cost £2OO. A three-roomed house, costing £BO a room —which is probably below the mark—would mean an outlay of £240, or a capital value, house and land, of £440.
The new concrete wharf to be erected at Clyde Quay for the Harbour Board by Mr. John McLean, will occupy two years in construction. The contract stipulates that the work shall be completed by September 30, 1909.
At the meeting of ratepayers of the Miramar Borough, held at Worser Bay last night, the Mayor (Mr. C. J. Crawford) remarked amid applause, that they were now within sight of the full completion of their tramway system.
