MARINE ENGINEERS
Annual Smoke Concert Success attended thei annual smoke concert of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Institute, of Marine and Power Engineers held in the Institute Hall,' Aitken Street, on Saturday evening. There was a large attendance, and a merry gathering . was presided over by Mr. P. MacKenzie. The chairman extended a _ hearty welcome to all present, especially to Mr A. C. Dickie and Mr. D. ,H. Sturrock, president'and secretary respectively of the Auckland branch of the institute. Reference was made to the deaths of Sir John Luke, Hon. W. Earnshaw, Mr. C. McKirdy and Mr. James Adamson, secretary of the Institute- of Marine Engineers, London, which had taken place during the year passed. . , The toast of the, "Engineering Industry? was proposed by Captain Knowles and replied to by Mr. G. Laing, who mentioned the wonderful work that engineers had done in the world’s civilisation. He referred to the great strides made in marine engineering during the past 50 years. In proposing the toast of “The Institute,” Mr. B. W. Mlllier, acting-sec-retary of the Marine Department, paid tribute to the able assistance rendered by the Institute in connection with'all matters upon which it had been approached by the, Department. The toast was replied to by Mr. A. C. Dickie, Mr. D. H. Sturrock and Mr. W. Sommerville, the secretary. Mr. Sommerville mentioned, the part played by the engineers and the mercantile marine iu connection with the transport of frozen products to the Home markets. Mr. D. McLaren proposed the toast of the “Mercantile Marine.” This toast, Mr. McLaren said, in his opinion was the most Important of the evening—the Dominion depended upon the Mercantile Marine for its very existence. The Institute and the Merchant Service Guild were great links in the binding together of the British Empire. Their services were valuable and could not be ignored. The toast was replied to by Captain Knqwles, president of the Merchant Service Guild, and Captain Maclndoe, secretary of the Guild. During the evening some acceptable musical items were given, and those present sang a number of community songs. -
