CARELESS MOTORISTS

Parking on Fire Hydrants DANGER IS EMPHASISED Concern at the number of motorists who persist in parking their cars oyer fire hydrants is expressed by the Wellington Fire Brigade. In case of outbreak of fire, when it is essential that the hoses should be put into operation without any loss of time, the presence of a car standing over a hydrant, probably locked and with brakes on, would undoubtedly hamper the firemen greatly. The only alternative would be to tip the car over on its side, and even then it would be In the way. It is pointed out that in the past complaint was made that the presence of the hydrants was not made clear by distinguishing marks. This has been remedied by the painting of large semi-circular white marks on the kerbing wherever there is a bydrant in the roadway. These marks are easily distinguished, and it isjjoped that they may be replaced by permanent flagstones in the future. It is likely that unless motorists fail to keep clear of the hydrants, prosecutions will follow in the near future.
