LIFE-SAVING CLUB
Maranui Begins Season HONOUR FOR MEMBER Although marred to a certain extent by the. boisterous weather, the opening on Saturday afternoon of the Maranui Surf and Life-Saving Club was most successful, being well attended by members and their friends. A notable feature of the proceedings was the presentation to Mr. A. Ross of a life membership medal. The opening ceremony was performed by Mr. R. Semple, who was accompanied by Mrs. Semple, and who was introduced by the club’s president, Mr. T. Queree. Mr. Semple congratulated the club on its past achievements and spoke in terms of the highest praise of the services rendered to the community not only by the Maranui club but also by all life-saving clubs. He expressed the hope that Maranui would enjoy another successful season. Later in the afternoon Mr. Semple presented Mr. A. Ross, who has been a member of the club since 1913, with a life membership medal. Mr. Semple in a brief speech eulogised the many good works done by Mr. Ross on behalf of the Club. Mr. Queree, who spoke along similar lines, referred to the excellent record of the Maranui club, which, he said, ranked among the premier life-saving clubs of New Zealand. This was largely due to the work of the foundation members, of which Mr. Ross was one. All present sang “For He’s a Jolly Fellow,” after which Mr. Ross replied briefly. During the afternoon there were exhibitions of life-saving and there was also a club competition, the results of which are as follow: — Queree Cup.—Stiver’s team, 8-1 points; East's team, 82 points; Sleeman’s team, 73 points. Stellin Cup: Fleming’s team, 80 points; Mehalfey’s team, 77 points; Rosie’s team, 73 points. Afternoon tea was served in the clubhouse, and a dance baud provided the latest music. A successful dance was held in the evening.
