OBITUARY

Mr. E. J. Haydon The death has occurred at Waipoti Falls, Dunedin, of Mr. Edwin J. Haydon, a veteran of the South African and Great Wars. A member of a wellknown Dunedin family, Mr. Haydon had been employed by the city corporation ever since he left school. In his early days the late Mr. Haydon was an enthusiastic volunteer, being a member of the B Battery, Dunedin. Upon the outbreak of the South African War he left with the second contingent, and fought In most of the most famous engagements. Upon his being transferred to Waipori, Mr. Haydon relinquished the rank of lieutenant in the B Battery. However, when the Great War broke out he volunteered as a trooper, but left as a sergeantmajor with the Otago Mounted Rifles Squadron of the Main Body, being in the fighting at Gallipoli. He went later to France, and was for some time camp sergeant-major at Etaples, afterward gaining commissioned rank in the Otago Infantry. Mr. Haydon never married. Mrs. T. W. Bowden A. respected settler of Marlborough, Mrs. Kate Florence Bowden, widow of the late Mr, T. W.- Bowden, died at the age of years. After a lengthy period of failing health, the end came peacefully at her home in Upper Broadway, Picton, at five o clock on Thursday morning. Deceased was a daughter of the late Mr E. Thirkill, some time manager of the' Patent Slip in -Wellington, and organiser of the successful expedition which raised the s.s. Taranaki in Tory Channel. She was married to Mr. T. W. Bowden on August 19, 1884, and after living in Wellington for some time, accompanied her husband to Scarboro’ Run, Queen Charlotte Sound, where they successfully farmed for a lengthy period, until the captain returned to the sea. After leaving the sounds, Mr. and Mrs. Bowden went to Picton to reside, and the captain died on August 22, 1928, at the age of 69 years. She leaves one son, Mr. Percy Bowden, and one daughter, Mrs, Mervyn Kenny, both of Picton, and a sister, Mrs. R. E. Bowden, of Kilbirnie, Wellington. Mr. H. W. Hilton The death occurred at Dunedin yesterday of Mr Herbert Warren Hilton; formerly a well-known officer of the Bank of New Zealand. The late Mr. Hilton was born at Liverpool, and came to New Zealand 50 years ago, joining the staff of the bank at Christchurch in 18S3, and later came to Otago, and at different times was manager of branches at Naseby and Milton He was transferred from the latter place to the North Dunedin branch in 1916, which position he held till the time of his retirement in 1921,,
