Blame for Home Brew POLICE COURT CASES Twenty-pound Penalties Home-brew, which, according to Mr. W E. Leicester, had evidently been made by some person who had taken a liberal view o£ the recipe, was attributed to be the cause of the intoxication of John George Cummings,, motor mechanic, aged 27, who appeared before Mr. E. Page, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday, when he admitted a charge of being intoxicated in charge of a motor-car in Featherston Street. Cummings was lined £2O, and was given one month in which to find the money- t __ *.• According to Sub-Inspector Martin, Cummings was noticed, shortly after 1,1.30 p.m. on November 14, trying to lift the bonnet of his car in Featherston Street. He did not appear to know what to do. He was accosted by two constables who considered that he was quite unfit to drive. He explained that he had been to a party, where he had been drinking home brew. Having pleaded guilty to a charge of being intoxicated in charge of a motorcar in Waring Taylor Street, George Hill, labourer, aged 51, was fined £2O, and his driver’s license cancelled for 12 months. Sub-Inspector Martin said that accused, at 5.30 p.m. on Thursday, was seen to turn from Featherston Street into Waring Taylor Street and drive into another motor-car. A constable went to make inquiries, and found that accused was intoxicated. Accused admitted having had some liquor. The sub-inspector added that Hill had a previous conviction for a similar charge. Theft of Gloves “We regard this man as belonging .to the hooligan class and one of the agitators,” said Detective-Sergeant Revell in reference to William Cruickshank, who was charged with stealing a pair of men’s leather gloves, the property of Mate Matulich. Accused, who is at present on probation for receiving, was fined £5, in default one month’s imprisonment. Gaol for Seamen Attributing his downfall to methylated spirits and asking to be sent to Rotoroa Island, William Vinard, seaman, aged 50, who appeared for sentence on a vagrancy charge, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. On a charge of stealing a watch he was sentenced, to six months’ imprisonment, and for stealing a bottle of jnilk he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within 12 months if called upon. Detective-Sergeant Revell said that accused had a long list of previous convictions for theft and other offences. Other Cases Samuel Keech was fined 10/- and costs for striking Douglas G. W. Lean, and Lean was convicted and discharged for using insulting words. For behaving in an offensive manner in Manners Street, William T. Moulin was fined £5. Ernest Trimmer, labourer, aged 64, who asked to be sent to a home, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment on a charge of being an idle and disorderly person with insufficient lawful means of support. For failing to stamp a bill of exchange, William E. Goodwin was fined £3 and costs. The use of unlicensed radio sets resulted in Gerald Ashbey, Mabel Harvey and Robert Roulston each being fined 10/and costs.

An elderly woman was placed on probation for twelve months for stealing a Red Cross collection box valued at 2/6. A fine of £1 and costs was imposed on Salvatore Destafano for failing to pay the unemployment levy. On a charge of stealing a letter containing £2, the property of the Postmas-ter-General, John Ives O’Shea, labourer, aged 38, was remanded until November 25. Detective-Sergeant Revell said that other charges were pending. Charged with stealing 6/7, the property of the New Zealand Government, John Henry Molloy, draughtsman, aged 36, was remanded until November 25.
