STREET-WIDENING Petone Council’s Position AUTHORITY NOT LAPSED Petone councillors expressed concern last evening at a statement made by a prominent citizen of Petone that the authority of the council to raise the Jackson Street Widening Loan had hapsed. To the council the mayor, Mr. D. McKenzie, gave assurance that such was not the case. “In 1931 a Jackson Street Widening Loan of £35,000 was authorised,” the mayor said. “This authority does not lapse for five years—that is, 1936. We are endeavouring to raise £7OOO in the meantime to pay off liabilities incurred. We have advanced in all £ll,OOO from overdraft, pending receipt of loan moneys, and have the authority to raise money at 5J amortisation basis, or 5i per cent, flat rates. It is difficult to raise money at the present time on the amortisation basis, and legislation is pending which will permit us to borrow at 54 flat rate. In the meantime we are holding £5OOO on temporary loan until we get this authority. At present our overdraft would only be £6OO if the £ll,OOO were raised. The whole position is that the money market is not favourable for borrowing,” he concluded. “NIGHT IN THE ARMY” Those who attended the dance at Miss Draper’s studio on Saturday, evening enjoyed another original evening. Saturday’s entertainment took the form ot a “Night in the Army.” The hall was a parade ground, with tents, canteen, etc., bearing reminiscent legends, and a uniformed orchestra was esconced in “The Better ’Ole.” Many of the dancers wore uniforms, the remainder .wearing paper service caps. Lew Arnolds. Marimba Band supplied the music, which consisted of war songs. The novelty dance was an “Air Raid,” during which bombs exploded and shells whistled.
