Sunday „ Excursions

Sir, —Referring to a letter under the above heading - over the nom de plume "Observer” I would suggest that if “Observer” reads my-letter again he will see that it is to the adherence to old-fash-ioned dactrines. I refer, not ideals. I venture to state that my ideals are the same as h's, and are shared by all right-think-ing men, and as such are eternal can never be old-fashioned.

It also appears that he shares the confusion of day evinced by many other correspondents. Let him refer in any encyclopaedia to the heading “Calendar” and maybe, like myself, he will entertain doubts' as to what day we do observe. Considering also we are in the antipodes I often wonder whether it is not Wednesday night we religiously observe. He states that the observance of Sunday is the very foundation-stone on which Christianity stands.■ That is news to me! Apart from St Peter’s claim to the honour, I am under the impression that one of the foundations of Christianity is “Love one another,” “And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.” Seeing, moreover, that when the foundations of Christianity were laid Sunday was not invented I venture to contradict his statement. I appreciate the information that Bibles are cheap, but not the implication behind it. An observant . reader would notice my statement of being a churchman, and it is not reasonable to suppose that such a one would be without copies' of the Scriptures. The old doctrines were promulgated to a people whose working week was spent mainly in the open air, and to such, one day in seven (first or seventh is immaterial) spent indoors sheltered from the blazing sun was indeed a rest, but in these changed times those of us confined Inside all the week find that the day spent in the open air is a rest. Hence we take the injunction in . its. broader figurative meaning and set out on our tramps not only with a clear conscience, but al«o with sincere thanks in our heart to our Divine Creator for-health and strength to enjoy His wondrous works. —I am. etc. I W. F. C. VINE. Ngaio,' October 28.
